Fortunately, there are numerous natural, noninvasive therapies that may benefit the bodies own natural healing abilities. Among these are massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, nutritional supplementation, and herbs. Each one provides a "nudge" that can activate healing or remove obstacles that may be blocking recovery. It is amazing to observe the body at work with the appropriate intervention.
A good practitioner will tailor a treatment plan unique to your needs. Beware of the practitioner who claims to be able to treat everything. It is essential that the practitioner get a whole picture of your health both physically and emotionally. Just like any other professional, alternative practitioners vary greatly by skill, personality, and philosophy, so be sure to find one whom you are compatible with.
It is sometimes possible to recover from pain without hand-on therapies such as massage, chiropractic, or acupuncture. In general, the following nutritional protocol can be applied to most chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
- A quality multi-vitamin/mineral. Typically involves taking more than "one-a-day" Check with your local health food store.
- Supplemental calcium/magnesium at 1000mg/500mg daily.
- Increase your intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. This can be accomplished by ingesting 1 to 2 tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily. Additionally, cold water fish
( salmon, mackerel, herring, halibut, etc.) should be consumed at least twice a week along with the reduction of other animal fats.
- Glucosamine Sulfate 1500mg/day
- Drink at least 48 ounces of water daily
- Exercise at least 30 minutes three times per week
- If there are digestive complaints be sure to be evaluated to determine if there may be an absorption problem that may render supplementation ineffective. Ask your alternative practitioner about testing.
- Most importantly, eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and whole grains, keep a positive attitude, and learn how to relax.
